Battle of the Gluten-free Frozen Meals!!!

Our first match-up was about two weeks ago. (Click Here to see how those competitors fared)
I had such a great time with the challenge and the readers seemed to enjoy it as well. SO without further ado...

Today's challengers Both cost less than $4.50, include beef/pork raised without antibiotics, are between 290 and 300 calories, have 16g of protein and of course are Gluten-free*! However only One meal can prevail on the frozen meal battlefield...

...Will it be the KOREAN INSPIRED BEEF EatingWell's "take on traditional Korean bibimbap") -OR- the "gourmet Mexican cuisine" AL PASTOR TACO BOWL from Frontera?

First we have the KOREAN INSPIRED BEEF, an "explosion of vibrant colors & flavors, this dish mixes fire-grilled beef, rice and vegetables with a savory sesame garlic sauce”.

I Loved:
-Certified Gluten-free
-1 cup of vegetables
-Good source of Iron
-Best Brown Rice EVER! (And I am not a fan of brown rice)

I Didn’t Like:
-Even though the beef was tasty, it was a little chewy

Up next was the AL PASTOR TACO BOWL. This bowl was packed with "seared, braised pork, New Mexico chile sauce, fire-roasted peppers" w/ a grain blend and pineapple.

I Loved:
-Lots of Tender & Tasty Pork
-6g of Fiber
-100 mg less sodium
-The complexity of the spicy chile sauce coupled with the sweet pineapple
-Only 4.5 minutes to cook
-The meal was completely filling even though it included little rice

I Didn’t Like:
-The bowl is labelled as Mild but it includes chile sauce and red peppers

This was a tough one! We had two great competitors today but the flavor combo of the AL PASTOR TACO BOWL put it a few points ahead of the KOREAN INSPIRED BEEF for me. Needless to say, I look forward to enjoying both these flavorful meals again soon.

*AL PASTOR TACO BOWL is not labeled as gluten-free. After consulting its ingredient list, I assume it is gluten-free. However, I do not know for a certainty and am not claiming that it is certified gluten-free

  1. We should try to make these ourselves. Probably be cheaper. Walmart and Lidl have wonderful sauce kits that you can get to make your own versions. Cameron and I love making chicken tikka masala.
